Hello. My name is Brian Elander and I am a bike rider. I purposely use the simple term of bike rider in lieu of a more glamorous title such as 'elite racer' or 'professional' because I feel as though those terms are more narrow than what I aspire to be. While of course I do have dreams of crossing the Leadville finish line first or wearing the rainbow jersey of a world champion, those dreams only fill in the background of a much more vibrant mural. I believe that that is the beauty of being just a bike rider. The simplicity of that existence allows me to follow my heart, and my heart says ride. It tells me to go and put in the work, not because I feel obligated to do so, but because it is truly what I want to be doing. I want to do hard things. The hardest things. I want to pedal the most remote mountains as fast as I can. I want it to hurt and I want it to challenge the very essence of my being. I want to be the guy who finds and takes on the hardest cycling events in the world. But more than that, I want to be the guy who wins them. But then I want to return home to my van and go ride with my mom or my friends with no numbers and no cares in the world. That is the most beautiful thing about this sport, that those moments can coexist. You get out of it exactly what you put into it. Each ride is uniquely its own and each remains unwritten until the wheels start turning. And the exciting thing is that my wheels have only just started moving.
